In FLESH, Peter J Walsh—also known as Rave One—returns with another window into the windowless world of Manchester’s fabled nightclub, The Haçienda.

Founded in 1991 by Paul Cons and the late Lucy Scher, FLESH promised “serious pleasures for Dykes & Queers.” On the final Wednesday of every month, The Haçienda was transformed into a ballroom, a bubble bath or a beauty pageant in the buff.

Walsh photographed it all—within reason. His images capture Manchester’s finest at their most ecstatic: dressed all the way up and stripped all the way down, with no holds barred. The result is a joyful record of the night’s exuberance, flamboyance and unapologetic destruction of gender stereotypes.

FLESH emerged from a community changed by the AIDS epidemic, strengthened by activism and liberated on the dance floor by ecstasy and house music. It was political and necessary—but, above all, it was fun.
