Overview

Angela Hill first street cast Elizabeth White in 1997 and photographed her for VERY, the magazine Hill co-founded. Elizabeth’s portrait became one of the magazine’s most memorable covers. Nearly three decades later, it is the cover of ELIZABETH, a book that returns to Hill’s photographs of her childhood and adolescence.

The book draws on magazine tear sheets, vintage prints and damaged negatives. Much of Hill’s archive from the 1990s was lost in house moves or destroyed by floods, giving these surviving images particular importance. Among them is FASHION ASSISTANT, a story published in VERY No. 8 in 2000 and reproduced here from scanned pages after its negatives were lost. Together, the photographs preserve Hill’s instinctive, intimate way of seeing a young person as she changes over time.

ELIZABETH is the third in Hill’s series of single-subject books, following SYLVIA and EDITH. It includes a personal postscript by Edith Owen and a foreword by Alexandra Gordienko, Hill’s regular collaborator and the publisher of Marfa Journal.
